Where We Are
Jigawa state is located in the North Western Zone of the country and has an estimated projected population of 1,311,890 with a population growth rate of 5.8%. It has “the new world” as its state slogan. It has twenty-seven (27) LGA divided into three (3) senatorial zones. In fourth Quarter 2022, the Quality of Care (QoC) initiative was launched in the Jigawa state with the aim of improving Reproductive, Maternal Newborn, Child Health, Adolescent and Elderly Health plus Nutrition (RMNCAEH+N) healthcare standards. The governance structure of QoC operates at the state level, with State Level Technical Working Group (TWG) overseeing the coordination of QoC in the state with 2 LGA TWG established and 8 trained Health Facilities The state commenced operationalization of the Basic Health Care provision under (BHCPF) in last quarter of 2020 with actual implementation.

Facts and Achievements
- As of 2021, 260 out of a total of 287 ward level Health Facilities in the state received quarterly funds disbursed as Direct Facility Financing, through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) 1,311,890.
- Quality of Care (QoC) has received invaluable support from partners such as Momentum Country Global Leadership (MCGL), who share the vision of advancing quality care in the state and sponsors participation of the state at Technical Working Group (TWG) and sub-committee meetings. Currently the state has no partner supporting QoC implementation in the state.

- A score card is generated following each quarterly Quality Assessment (QA).
- To distill the essence of QoC’s impact into a concise format, a scorecard has been developed, focusing on three critical indicators: Maternal/Newborn, Family Planning, Child Health, Post Abortion Care and Nutrition.
- Since 4th Quarter 2022, the Quality Improvement (QI) teams have played a vital role in implementing strategic goals and driving positive change within the QoC framework
- A score card is generated following each quarterly Quality Assessment (QA).
- A thorough baseline assessment was conducted, revealing that the Deliveries Monitoring Using a Partograph indicator stood at 50%, indicating room for improvement
- Since its inception, the initiative has expanded its reach to encompass 8 healthcare facilities, enabling a broader impact on the state.
- The state commenced operationalization of the Basic Health Care provision under (BHCPF) in last quarter of 2020 with actual implementation in 2021
- Quality Assurance of 8 HFs was conducted in the previous quarter to track progress across 10 priority areas, ensuring judicious use of the health facility funds
- The progress of QoC is closely monitored through the tracking of 30 different indicators in the state , ensuring continuous improvement in healthcare outcomes. There is a Quality Improvement (QI) project funded by Global Fund through National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) on TB, HIV , Malaria and Covid 19 with potential to expand to RMNCAH +N.
Success Stories
Improved Health Facility Community ownership and participation from all learning sites
The state has witnessed improved ownership and participation of the Health Facility/Community by the learning sites. There is also provision of incentive to the best performance Midwife which has greatly resulted in improved performance. The provision of free Delivery Kit through BHCPF and Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) services to the some selected facilities in the state for mothers, Under 5 Years, Boarding Students and Inmate has greatly improved maternal health.
