Where We Are

Bauchi state is located in the North East geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has an estimated projected population of 8,255,946 with a population growth rate of 3.4%. It has Pearl of Tourism as its state slogan.
The state has twenty (20) LGA divided into three (3) senatorial zones; North has seven (7) LGA, Central has six(6) LGA and South has seven (7) LGA respectively. There are 323 wards in the state and at least one main PHC per ward. A total of 169 facilities are currently implementing Quality of Care (QoC) including 7 general hospital as at Q1 2023.

Facts and Achievements

  • In 2018, the Quality of Care (QoC) initiative was launched in Bauchi state with the aim of improving Reproductive, Maternal Newborn, Child Health, Adolescent and Elderly Health plus Nutrition (RMNCAEH+N) healthcare standards.
  • A thorough baseline assessment was conducted, revealing that the RMNCH indicator stood at 50%, indicating room for improvement.
  • The governance structure of Quality of Care (QoC) operates at the state level, with the state overseeing the coordination of entities  Technical Working Group (TWG), Quality Improvement Management (QIM) and Ward Development Committee (WDC).
  • Since its inception, the initiative has expanded its reach to encompass 169 healthcare facilities, enabling a broader impact on the state.
  • QoC has received invaluable support from partners such as , UNICEF and Integrated Health Programs (IHP) who share the vision of advancing quality care in Bauchi state.
  • The state commenced operationalization of the Basic Health Care provision under (BHCPF) in Bauchi State
  • Bauchi state adopted the WHO-led QoC approach for Quality Improvement and inaugurated its State QoC Committee in September 2018. The State participated in the baseline survey organized by the FMoH in preparation for the QoC roll out – conducted in December 2018/January 2019.
  • So far 323 Health facilities in Bauchi state of the target 323 receive quarterly funds disbursed as Direct Facility Financing, through the BHCPF.
  • QA of 323 HFs was conducted in the previous quarter to track progress across 10 priority areas, ensuring judicious use of the health facility funds
  • A score card is generated following each quarterly QA
  • The progress of QoC is closely monitored through the tracking of 12 different indicators, ensuring continuous improvement in healthcare outcomes
  • To distill the essence of QoC’s impact into a concise format, a scorecard has been developed, focusing on three critical indicators:
    1. Administration of uterotonic within 1 minute after delivery
    2. Immediate drying of the baby
    3. Temperature taken at least 1hour after delivery of the baby, Delay cord clamping and early breastfeeding
  • Since 2020, the Quality Improvement (QI) teams has played a vital role in implementing strategic goals and driving positive change within the QoC framework.So far 323 Health facilities in the state have received quarterly funds disbursed as Direct Facility Financing, through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF). This represents 100% of the targeted health facilities.

PPH Case Reduction

Reduction number of Post Partum Hemorrhage (PPH) cases was observed in three General Hospitals (GH TORO, GH WARJI & GH T/BALEWA) out of the seven where QOC is being implemented, especially when data from community information board and present data from LD register were compared.
There was also decrease in referrals due to Post Partum Hemorrhage (PPH) from QI implementation PHCs in the state

Hypothermia Case Reduction

Hypothermia cases were reduced in newborn especially in GM MISAU. In 2020, hypothermia cases were about 36% and has since reduce to about 7% based on the data shown during mentoring visit in Q4 2022.
