Where We Are

Rivers State has an estimated projected population of 9,154,432 with a population growth rate of 3.4% (Projected Population by LGAs (based on 2006 Nat. Provisional Results with the State-specific Growthrate) The state maternal mortality ratio MMR is 448.2/100,000 (DHIS 2021), Neonatal mortality rate 70/1000 ive births (MICS 2021), U5 mortality rate is 100/1000 live births (MICS 2021), Fertility rate is 3.1% (MICS 2021) 

Delivery attended by Skilled birth 71% (MICs Survey 2021)  

  • Rivers state was initially supported by  ensuring QIT teams and the QoC Operational plan was pushed out in 2022 .  
  • However, quality of care associated programs such as Oxygen production in the sick neonate and Oxygen plant launch(CHAI),Mentor mothers in PMCTC and MPCDSR are major programs supported by UNICEF in the state.  
  • WHO is also been very instrumental especially in advocating and lending technical support for the various RMNCAH programs in the state. 

 There are 8 Health facilities   implementing QI activities and all are learning site Bori Zonal Hospital, Okrika General hospital. However, the other six PHC facilities are yet to commence activities due to adminstrative constraints. 

The state had proposed to scaled up to 50 learning sites as at the first quarter of 2023 though optimistic this can be achieved before the end of Q3.

Success Stories

The Mentor mothers were oriented on Identifying and reporting issues of experience of care for PMCTC clients. This was done were  trained on Respectful Maternity Care. They were trained on the need of educating the mothers on their Human rights of and the need for effective communication between patients and MM. 

The different forms of abuse were described, and role plays aided demonstration of this issues. 

Documentation tools were provided. Though supportive supervision is yet to be commenced the team is optimistic indicators here thus lacking will be provided for.
